Dear Andrew Families,
On Thursday, March 5 at 8:30 am, district administration was alerted to a smell of natural gas near the front doors of the school. The decision was made to immediately evacuate the school to ensure the safety of all students. This is consistent with our emergency procedures manual. Students left the building, walked to our secondary safety location near the Catholic Church and then loaded buses to stay warm. Students were on the buses for approximately 10 minutes before Black Hill natural gas company determined it was safe the return to the building. Once the building was safe the students were transported back to the building and continued their day.
The gas leak was caused by some routine maintenance on Wednesday evening by Black Hills Energy. The crew from Black Hills responded immediately this morning and corrected the issue in a few minutes. Representatives from Black Hills also completed numerous walk throughs of our building to ensure it was safe for re-entry.
The safety of our students is the most important thing to all of us. We have evacuation procedures in place to make sure that students and staff are aware of how to evacuate the building whenever necessary. We are confident that students are safe at Andrew. If you have any concerns, please contact Tara Notz, PK-8 Principal or Andy Crozier, Superintendent.
